Zula: a cozy workplace by day and a quiet hangout at night

Zula is a newly opened restaurant/hostel in Poblacion, Makati.  Started only a few months ago, they aim to provide freshest high-quality Mediterranean food to its guests and walk-in customers.

Zula is a slang term meaning, a place to hang-out. As what their Facebook page says, “they offer city dwellers, young professionals, and world travelers a cozy workplace by day and a quiet hangout at night.”

The place is a bit small but there’s an alfresco area.  I liked that it was well lit and well organized, too. You can also see your food being prepared as they have an open kitchen.

Here are Zula’s signature sauces: Tahini and Zula Sauce.  The Zula Sauce is basically made from smoked paprika. It has a hot flavor but does not sting.  So, you can still enjoy the flavor of the dish.

The white one is the Tahini sauce which is made from crushed sesame seeds, lemon juice, garlic, and water.  It is a perfect dip for anything.  I tried it with Arayes and it balances the flavor or the smoky meat.

Labaneh (Php250) – strained Greek yoghurt, grilled artichokes, tomatoes, chopped walnuts, spring onions, za’atar, drizzled with Silan and olive oil. Served with Sesame Bagel

I love the consistency of the strained yoghurt as it was not too thick and heavy.  The smoked artichoke added some smoky flavor to it while the crushed walnut added some crunch. The tomatoes gave a little acidity while the Silan – or the dates syrup married with sweetness.  Overall, I think this is one perfect appetizer.

Unlike any other Bagel, this one has soft texture making it easy to break and easy to eat, too.  Now, you have to use your bare hands and dip it with Labaneh. I assure that you can finish this in no time.

Arayes (Php350) – grilled mixture of beef and lamb in pita bread, served with Tahini, Zula sauce and fresh vegetable salad

IMG_0905

The vegetable salad consists of cucumber, carrots, parsley with lemon dressing.  It tasted sour due to the lemon dressing but that made the vegetables even crispier.

I could say that I appreciated Mediterranean food all the more because of this dish.  The beef and lamb were tender and has a bit of peppery taste to it.  While the Pita bread was so crispy as it was baked then grilled.  Imagine all that smoky flavor.  It also includes pickled lemon.  This is a great pair as it neutralizes the flavor of the meat altogether.  Add some Tahini sauce, too for all the wonderful flavors.

Even the Iced Tea was a refreshing as it was made from Black Tea with Orange and Lemon.
